The kid wants to do Ultras now :(. Mainly because of this guy here --->
Today I showed him how to paint using thin watered down coats with glaze medium. He painted a base coat on his dreadnought tonight. Tomorrow we'll start with the highlights. I'm going to keep it simple for him now just because I don't want him getting frustrated and lose interest.
My plan is to have him dry brush the highlights on the edges then wash the dread down with a GW wash like Badab Black or something to give the model a gritty look. After his painting today he met up with a really nice kid who was 8 years old. He was new at the game as well, and was running Orks. Pretty smart kid. He knew the rules for his army ok. My son was shocked when Thraka rolled out of that battle wagon and smoked his dread!
Kid took the loss very well! I was proud of him not throwing tantrums or getting mad after he lost. He went over to Trey and shook has hand and told him good game. They were laughing about how Aaron flamed a bunch of his orks and how my son's dread got beat up. Then about how Aaron's Chapter Master needed to make 2 4+ saves and rolled only one of them Dying horribly to the might of the Ork warlord! They had a lot of fun. It was nice to see that. You don't see a lot of adults playing that way. Very refreshing.
Hope to get my camera problem sorted out soon. We have a camera in the house, we just have to find it. I don't want to buy a new one because I'm saving $$$ for Gen-Con and pinching some pennies right now.
Until next time!

Good news there Marc. I picked up a couple of sets of the Marneus Calgar Honour guard and the models look great. I'm not painting them as Ultramarines but they are really fun and intricate to do (http://ghostnebulae.blogspot.com/2010/06/chess-is-wargame.html check out the end of that post if your son wants to see a pic).
ReplyDeleteI think you've got a good idea with the painting. A simple drybrush with a wash is better than half of the tabletop models I've seen played against me so I think he will be in good stead from the get go.
Very impressed at his gaming manner as well. It's nice when they can enoy and laugh about what went right and wrong in the games without getting into sulking or arguing. Again, something that many 'adult' games could learn from.
Looking forward to hearing more news and maybe seeing a photo or two of his dreadnought.
